For the third and fourth releases in our fases lunares (Lunar Phases) series, we are excited to share a pair of blends from opposing origins—one from the far north of the country and one from the south—both exceptional coffees that represent the freshest and best coffees from these two distant corners of Colombia: Nodo Norte and Nodo Sur.
Lunar nodes are the opposing points of intersection of the moon’s orbit around the Earth, and of the Earth’s orbit around the sun. A node is also a meeting point where several elements or spaces converge. We thought this celestial dance lent itself well to the concept in cup as we were determining the name of this set of blends; themselves the convergence or union of the hard work of several partner producers.
Nodo Norte, also known as the ascending node, comes from the lush, coastal origin that is the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, a system of mountains that is separate from the Colombian Andes, and that spans from the shores of the Caribbean Sea, all the way up to oftentimes snow-peaked mountains—hence the name, Nevada—including the two highest peaks in the country, the pico Cristóbal Colón and Simón Bolivar. Two years ago, we had the good fortune of entering into a sourcing relationship with a group of dedicated producers from this magical and unique environment; the second highest coastal mountain range in the world. Our collective goal was to highlight the best coffees from this region while maintaining and championing the growers’ systems of sustainable and ecologically-conscious agricultural practices.
We are incredibly proud to present the first of the two blends, a coffee that comes from a renowned farming family with two sisters fincas in the Sierra Nevada: finca Puerto Rico, found in the vereda of San Javier, and finca Porvenir, which belongs to Irene Chegwin, the matriarch of the family. Both farms fall under one name, Sol Bohemio, a family-run company that employs countless pickers and farmworkers. We received three micro lots from the producers and combined them at our lab with the intention of letting the three varieties of coffee (Yellow Bourbon, Castillo and Typica) meld and thrive together, while also emphasizing each respective flavor profile.
With Nodo Norte we embark on a sensory journey in cup that challenges the traditional profiles and notes that have made this origin renowned and favored worldwide. This coffee has an intense fragrance and body, with notes of apricot and nutmeg.
We invite you to accompany us on this tour for the senses, as we travel from north to south to discover the best coffees in Colombia.
