This blend marks our second featured coffee from the department of Magdalena, as well as our second collaboration with Ecolsierra (Red de Productores Ecológicos de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta), an organization founded in 2002 by 23 coffee-producing families with the objective of promoting and developing systems of sustainable and ecologically-conscious agriculture while keeping in mind the future generations of coffee farmers of the Sierra Nevada.

The three producers whose coffee make up our Blend Magdalena are coffee producers by inheritance and come from three distinct corners of the department. Guillermo Barbosa Arguello is originally from Guadalupe, Santander but has been living and growing coffee in the municipality of Ciénaga for over 50 years. This year, at his finca Piedras Blancas, Guillermo will be planting cacao. Piedras Blancas has a total surface area of 49 hectares, with approximately six of those planted with coffee. Victor Cordero Ardila’s finca El Edén spans six hectares, most of which are dedicated to growing coffee. The remaining hectarage is part of a protected natural reserve. Located two hours from the city of Santa Marta, El Edén is a relatively new project, and the coffee found in this blend is from the finca’s first harvest.

Last but certainly not least, is Jhony Villazón. His finca is located in the vereda of Bajo Agua Linda and covers ten hectares, with three currently in production with coffee. Jhony lives with his family on the farm.

Every coffee tells a different story. This blend represents the histories and narratives of not just these three producers, but it also highlights the coffee-growing tradition and commitment to environmental stewardship of the people of Magdalena, who value the earth, and recognize their home as a “small slice of heaven”.
