Our new Pulpa Tropical is the third launch in this year’s series which highlights coffees inspired by the sensorial associations the human brain makes with flavors and of course colors. This coffee is inspired by the color lime green.
The biggest challenge we faced with this new edition was finding harmony between three micro lots of different varieties—Colombia, Castillo and San Bernardo—in order to achieve a tropical profile with notes of starfruit or carambola, candied orange peel or desamargado de naranja, and sweet passionfruit or granadilla.
The coffees that make up Pulpa Tropical were cultivated by three producers from the department of Huila; Elizabeth Cerquera from the municipality of Iquirá and Audemar Marroquin and Edwin Zambrano from the municipality of Algeciras, respectively. Their coffees were grown between 1,700 and 1,750 m.a.s.l
Pulpa Tropical is the direct result of our Pickers Project, one of the initiatives run by our Manos al Grano foundation, with strives to better the working and living conditions of coffee pickers by paying them a legal wage, with benefits such as health insurance, pension, and social security, by providing training as well as secure housing and meals while they work the cherry harvest on allied and participating farms. We’d like to thank Iván René Marroquín, Hiraldo Mosquera, Carlos Alberto Anacona y Onias Castro for carrying out the highly skilled collection work for Pulpa Tropical.
As some of you may have noticed, we’ve been utilizing and sharing the recommendations of the latest Sustainable Coffee Buyer’s Guide* to evaluate the true impact of the price paid to the producers. For this newest addition to our menu, the average price paid per carga (125 kg) was 3.043.067 COP. At this price point, each producer should be able to make a dignified wage meaning that the workers on the farm also make a real salary.
Azahar is passionate about drinking and sharing a “better” coffee for the world, and that doesn’t just refer to the flavor, but also to the human beings behind that cup! Don’t miss out on trying Pulpa Tropical and let us transport your taste buds to the tropics.
*The Guide is a tool that strives to end the systematic poverty experienced by smallholders and perpetuated by capitalism by informing green buyers by providing context-driven, regional-specific data about the costs of production and cost of living of producing families. This way, buyers can make more informed decisions about how the prices they pay truly contribute in a sustainable and significant way to the livelihoods and needs of the producers.
