The final coffee in our series of blends inspired by the phases of the moon and their great influence on the everyday rituals of farmers all around the world, has arrived. With blend Luna Negra we wrap up seven months of a concept created in our lab, brought to life by our partner producers and roasters, and inspired by the celestial body that illuminates the night sky.
Luna Negra is actually a unique ensemble of micro lots of three varieties—Castillo, Caturra and Colombia—that were cultivated by producers in two of our most popular origins, the departments of Huila and Nariño, respectively. The name of this last blend was inspired by the fleeting moment when the moon appears to have turned its “back” to the Sun in the sky, resulting in it being completely hidden from sight during the day.
Our master roasters in Armenia worked carefully on the roast profile keeping in mind a concept known as “dew point”, which replicates the effect the moon has on the condensation that is created overnight and in the early morning, in the countryside. This effect occurs when low temperatures coincide with high levels of humidity. We were able to mimic this phenomenon with our production roaster, which allowed for the most interesting flavor profiles to linger and establish themselves in a subtle but palpable way within the bean, before the roasting curve was fully realized.
This level of detail resulted in a dynamic cup of coffee, which lends itself perfectly to several methods of preparation that can be carried out at home. The cup has notes of yellow and red fruits. If you tried and enjoyed the previous five lunar phase blends, this one will nicely round out the whole experience and we can’t wait for everyone to try it.
