Description
For this special edition, we set out to bring together in a single cup the geographical and sensory diversity of Huila, one of the most recognized regions in the world of Colombian coffee.
This blend combines Colombia, Castillo, Ombligón, and Caturra varieties from lots cultivated by producers Miller Walles Cruz, Luis Alberto Jojoa, Yina Andrea Silva, Sebastián Valencia, and Aldahyr Vaquiro Collazos in Paicol, Acevedo, Timaná, Bruselas, and La Plata.
These coffees were grown on farms with a wide range of microclimates, at elevations between 1,550 and 1,750 m.a.s.l., reflecting the natural richness, biodiversity, and agricultural heritage that define this territory. The result is a washed coffee with a balanced profile and tasting notes of caramel candy, green apple, and peach.
In Huila, coffee production remains deeply artisanal. The steep mountain slopes mean that much of the harvesting is still done by hand, allowing pickers to carefully select cherries at their peak ripeness. It is a craft that requires experience, patience, attention to detail, and knowledge that many coffee-growing families have preserved and passed down through generations. A cup of this coffee is the result not only of the region’s natural wealth, but also of the dedication of the people who continue to build and sustain its coffee tradition.
As always, during the purchasing process we followed the recommendations from A Sustainable Coffee Buyers Guide* to estimate the impact on the lives of the producer, their family, and the workers. In this case, the price per carga of 125 kg of coffee paid to the producer meets the goal of a Living Price, based on the concept of a Living Income developed by the Anker Research Institute. This price is designed to cover a basic but decent standard of living, including food for a balanced diet, adequate housing, and other essential needs for the producer and farm workers. While paying these prices does not guarantee that the producer will receive all the mentioned benefits, since it is based on regional averages, it does make it possible.
Discover through this special edition an expression of Huila’s landscape, biodiversity, and coffee heritage and enjoy a cup that captures the unique character of its mountains. A coffee available in limited quantities!
*The Guide is a tool that seeks to end the systematic impoverishment of smallholder farmers by providing buyers with region-specific data on production costs and the living costs of farming families. This allows buyers to make an informed decision about the price we pay for coffee, and whether it truly covers production costs and generates a profit that the producer can reinvest in the farm and his family. The aforementioned objective is determined by using the information provided in the latest version of the guide.
